In 1997 I finished high school. For my finals in English, I had to read "The Canterbury Tales" by Geoffrey Chaucer. Never read it. In those pre-internet days, we'd run to our local library and read the resume, they kept in files over there. What a solution, I thought back then.
At the moment, I find it a missed opportunity not to read Chaucer's work. After all, together with Shakespeare, a founder of English literature.
'For this was Volantynys day
Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make '
He wrote these sentences in the poem "Parliament of Fowls" back in the 14th century. "Because this was on Saint Valentine's Day when every bird comes to choose there its mate."
Pope Gelasius the first could not have known that the 14th of February would have so much impact on so many lives around the world throughout ages. It was he who declared mister Valentine holy in 496 on his ascension day, February 14th. From that day forward, the life of Saint Valentine would be honoured.
Valentine was the Bishop of Terni in Italy and he was ever so merciful. He was involved with the less fortunate people, the elderly and the more vulnerable. He paid visits to them. Listened. Reassured. He regularly took flowers with him. He was a passionate horticulturist and ensured that the monastery garden became widely known. The people from the whole region would visit the monastery gardens to admire nature and feel the energy that would reside there.
When young lovers came, this Bishop gave them a flower as a symbol of their loyalty, love and affection.
This, my beloved Keni, was the exact reason why couples came by and ask Valentine to bless their love and relation.
A man who devoted his life to mysticism, to the unseen but so tangible energy that is called love. The energy that animates all those lives and comes directly from ... (fill it in. I call it Spirit. Or G-d).
What a joy.
And Chaucer? I have to say I'm planning to actually read Chaucer. Pick it up again. It took a while. Before those inspiring lessons from my English teacher, Mr Zaal found its soil within me.
There you go. A seed planted so long ago finally gets to blossom.
